Industry Leaders of Indian Origin

IESA is working continuously towards creating awareness among various stakeholders to make the Indian industry more competitive by adoption of Energy Storage and Micro-grid Technologies since 2012. After back to back three successful events, IESA hosted its 4th International Energy Storage India Conference & Expo 2017 in the month of January from 11th to 13th at Nehru Centre, Mumbai (www.esiexpo.in)

In continuation of our efforts to promote the adoption of energy storage technologies in India, we came up with a special issue of “Emerging Technology News” – the Quarterly Magazine of IESA – to acknowledge the contribution of  Indians or People of Indian origin in the Global Energy Storage & Microgrid space.

The IESA Advisory Committee selected 55 Indians who have contributed to growth of the Energy Storage and Micro-grid industry.

  • Vinod Khosla - Founder, Khosla Ventures (Business Leaders) Open or Close

    Vinod Khosla is an entrepreneur, investor and technologist. In 2004, Vinod formed Khosla Ventures to focus on both for-profit and social impact investments; a firm focused on assisting entrepreneurs to build impactful new energy and technology companies. Vinod grew up dreaming of being an entrepreneur, despite being from an Indian army household with no business or technology connections. Vinod’s greatest passion is being a mentor to entrepreneurs building technology-based businesses. He is driven by the desire to make a positive impact through scaling new energy sources, achieving petroleum independence and promoting a pragmatic approach to the environment. He also is passionate about social entrepreneurship with a special emphasis on microfinance as a poverty alleviation tool. He is a supporter of many microfinance organizations in India and Africa. He also has been experimenting with innovations in education and global housing. Vinod also is a charter member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a non-profit global network of entrepreneurs and professionals that was founded in 1992 and has more than 40 chapters in nine countries today. He is a founding board member of the Indian School of Business (ISB). Vinod holds a bachelor of technology degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, India, a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a master’s degree in business administration from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

  • Dr. Rahul Walawalkar - President & MD, CES India (Business Leader) Open or Close
    Rahul is involved in providing inputs for demand response, energy storage & smart grid policy to government agencies in US and India as well as has provided inputs to multilateral agencies such as IRENA, IEA & ADB. He has served as an expert evaluator for US Department of Energy for various smart grid and energy storage demonstration projects in US during 2009-12.

    In 2012, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) nominated him as chairperson of working group on Integrating Renewable Energy Sources, Micro-Grids and Energy Storage as part of Smart Grid Coordination Committee. In June 2013, he was also nominated as member of national taskforce for integration of Electricity from renewable energy sources in the Grid during the 12th Plan by Central Electricity Authority & Ministry of Power. In May 2014, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) nominated him on the standing committee for energy storage and hybrids.

    Rahul has been a speaker in 100+ international conferences during the last decade and has also authored 5 book chapters on topics covering energy efficiency, demand response and energy storage. Rahul has obtained Smart Grid Maturity Model (SGMM) Navigator certification from Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and also a Masters in Energy Management from New York Institute of Technology, having obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli.

    Rahul is President and Managing Director of Customized Energy Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. and leads the Emerging Technologies practice for Customized Energy Solutions globally with focus on energy storage, renewables, demand response and smart grid technologies as well as international markets. He is also founder and Executive Director for India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). He served as member of the Board of Directors of Energy Storage Association (ESA) in US during 2009-15 and was elected as Secretory in 2013. He was elected as Vice Chair for Global Energy Storage Alliance (GESA) in 2014.
  • Gururaj Deshpande - Co-Founder, Deshpande Foundation (Business Leader/Investor) Open or Close

    Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande is the President and Chairman of Sparta Group LLC, a family investment office and is also the Chairman of Tejas Networks. Dr. Deshpande has pursued an entrepreneurial career for the last three decades. He is involved either as the founder, a founding investor or chairman of several companies including Cascade Communications, Sycamore Networks, Coral Networks, Tejas Networks, Cimaron, Webdialogs, Airvana, Sandstone Capital, A123 Systems and Curata. Dr. Deshpande lives in Boston and serves as a life-member of the MIT Corporation, and his support has made possible MIT’s Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. Deshpande co-chairs a National Council to support President Obama’s innovation and entrepreneurship strategy. Dr. Deshpande holds a B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras, an M.E. from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and Ph.D from Queens University in Canada.

  • Yashraj Khaitan - CEO, Gram Power (Emerging Business Leaders) Open or Close

    Yashraj Khaitan started working on Gram Power when he was 19. Before that, he worked on organic solar cells in high school, build cube satellites in college and after completing his B.S. at UC-Berkeley decided to drop out of his post graduate program to start Gram Power and work on high impact technologies for the masses. He has a strong unrest for scale and fuels the team with the same hunger. He finds the title of CEO very boring and prefers to call himself the team’s mafia! When he’s not in office, he’ll most likely be found gorging on Indian street food.

  • Dr. P. C. Maithani - Scientist G, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy(MNRE) (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Dr. P. C. Maithani is currently working as a Director in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. During his professional career he has worked on different aspects of renewable energy programmes and policies. Dr. Maithani was Visiting Fellow with TERI for a year in 2006 and also visiting Faculty at TERI University in 2013. He holds a doctorate in Physics and Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He has contributed to many papers and articles and authored a book ‘Renewable Energy in the Global Context’.

  • Dr. Sajid Mubashir Member - R&D National Automotive Board, Department of Heavy Industries (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Dr. Sajid Mubashir is Scientist G in Department of Science & Technology. He is member-secretary for the (new) DHI-DST Technology Platform for Electric Mobility (TPEM), which will implement demand-driven R&D / Roadmap based program to develop technologies in Battery & Charging Infrastructure; Vehicle Systems Integration; Electrical Components; Materials & Manufacturing. Most of the R&D Projects will be in Public-Private-Partnership mode, as Consortia Projects. The Mission will also establish half dozen major Centers of Excellence in Electric Mobility research. For the last 2 years he was Member R&D at the National Automotive Board (NAB), Department of Heavy Industry and has been part of the Collaborative Automotive R&D (CAR) Program (2004-2010), and Home Grown Technology Program (HGT) - 1997-2005.

  • S. K. Soonee - CEO, POSOCO (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Mr. S. K. Soonee has been the Chief Executive Officer of Power System Operation Corporation Limited since May 2010. He served as an Executive Director of System Operations at Power Grid Corporation of India Limited and has 30 years of work experience. He has three decades of first-hand experience of Power System Operation of Eastern, Southern and Northern Grids of India. He joined Central Electricity Authority through Central Power Engineering Services in 1978. Mr. Soonee has worked extensively in Integration of State Grids to form a Regional Grid and subsequent integration of Regional Grids leading to the formation of the National Grid. He specializes in Power System Operation, Planning, Commercial, Settlement, Restoration and entire gamut of Power Pooling and Governance. Prior to joining PowerGrid Corporation of India Ltd. in January 1995, he worked in the CEA. Mr. Soonee is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), Senior Member of IEEE and represents India on the CIGRE Study Committee C2 on Power System Operation and Control. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

  • Pramod Kulkarni - Senior Advisor – Emerging Technologies, Customized Energy Solutions (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Pramod Kulkarni is a Senior Advisor at the Customized Energy Solutions’ Emerging Technologies Group focusing on the developments in regulations, technologies and markets that create opportunities for clients in the energy storage sector in the US and India. Pramod brings 30+ years of experience of developing, financing and commercializing energy technologies. Prior to joining Customized Energy Solutions, for 22 years Pramod worked at the California Energy Commission where he initiated and then managed a program to fund development and demonstration of energy storage technologies. Several of these projects laid the foundation for commercialization of important energy technologies in California’s dynamic energy markets. In the 90s and early 00s Pramod actively and successfully advocated for energy storage technologies to mitigate energy issues such as peak load reduction or load management, and championed for budgets for energy storage technology development and demonstrations. In his effort to develop and demonstrate energy storage technologies Pramod actively collaborated with the US Department of Energy and the US national energy laboratories such as the Sandia National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Active collaboration between California and the US Department of Energy (a federal government agency) became a model for US Department’s partnership agreements with other states in the US. Pramod has also been a reviewer for the US DOE’s energy storage technology program since 1998, and was an advisor for the DOE/EPRI’s 2013 Handbook of Energy Storage. Pramod has also made numerous presentations on expanding role of energy storage for renewable integration, grid management and microgrids. Before joining the Energy Commission Pramod worked for a Fortune 100 company, an energy consulting company, an angel investor and a startup company. Pramod has a BS and MS from India and an MBA from USA.

  • Dr. Dinesh Arora - Executive Director, Rural Electrification Corporation (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Dr. Dinesh Arora is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, 2002 Kerala cadre, who is working as an Executive Director, Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) and CEO RECPDCL. In November 2014, Arora received the SKOCH Gold Award 2014 from the Union Minister for Urban Development; Venkaiah Naidu for its Web based MIS System for RGGVY Projects - "RE Monitor". The System is judged as best project of the country and was conferred the highest Independent Honour. Recently, he was presented with Global HR Excellence Awards 'CEO WITH HR ORIENTATION'- at World HRD Congress-2016 by Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Arora completed his MBBS in medicine surgery and acquired first division with distinction. He is one of the few Indian bureaucrats who clinched five out of 12 berths of Prestigious Chevening Gurukul Scholarship 2011 for Leadership and Excellence.

  • Dr. Satish Agnihotri - Former Secretary, MNRE (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Dr. Satish B. Agnihotri recently retired as Secretary (Coordination & Public Grievances), Cabinet Secretariat. Prior to this he was Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Director General (Acquisition) in the Ministry of Defence, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture discharging the role of Financial Advisor and the Director General of Shipping during 2010-12. He has worked as Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, Transport Commissioner, Odisha and Secretary, Women and Child Development and General Administration Department. He was Vice Chairman, Cuttack Urban Development Authority, CEO of the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency, Director Industries and District Magistrate in Dhenkanal District. He also worked with UNICEF, Kolkata as Consultant on Child Nutrition and Health. He is an IAS officer of Odisha cadre from the 1980 batch. He has done his Master’s degree in Physics followed by M.Tech in Environment Science and Engineering from IIT, Bombay. He later did an MA in Rural Development followed by a Ph.D on sex ratio patterns in Indian Population from School of Development Studies, University of East Anglia, Norwich UK. His research on declining sex ratios in India has been approvingly cited by scholars including Prof. Amartya Sen. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Mumbai in 2002 and is an adjunct Professor at IIT Bombay in the Centre for Technology Alternatives in Rural Areas. He also writes political satire and science fiction in Hindi and plays flute as a hobby. His collection of satire “TahanTahanBhrashtaachaar” has been published in Hindi by Rajkamal, New Delhi and in Marathi by Parchure Publications as “ZopiGelaaKumbhakarNa”. He has written a short monograph “Energy Access – tracing the contours of deprivation” published by the CSE on the occasion of the Anil Agrawal Energy Dialogue 2015.

  • Pankaj Batra - Member – Planning, Central Electricity Authority (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Shri Pankaj Batra is presently handling the Division on Regulatory Affairs in CEA, dealing with Standards and Regulations of CEA, Regulations of CERC and SERCs, and associated issues. He also handles various policy issues. He is the Chairperson of Working Group VI on “Policy and Regulation” in the India Smart Grid Forum. He has conducted a number of Workshops for Regulators and Transmission and Distribution companies. He is also in the Committee of Ministry of Power for framing Model Regulations on Smart Grid. He was posted to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in 1983 and deputed by Govt of India to Chukha Hydro Power Corporation in Bhutan in August, 1991, where he joined as Executive Engineer (Operations), responsible for operation of the Power House, Switchyard and Dam. He also later worked as Executive Engineer (Transmission), where he was responsible for operation and maintenance of transmission and distribution system of Bhutan and also erection of the first 220 kV station in Bhutan at Thimphu. He framed the regulations of CEA on Technical Standards for Connectivity to the Grid and regulations on Grid Standards. He worked as Chief (Engineering) in Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) from April 2009 to February 2013 and was involved in formulating various Regulations, viz. Grant of Connectivity, Long-term Access and Medium-term Open Access, Measures to relieve congestion in real time operation, Grant of Regulatory Approval for Capital Investment to CTU for execution of Inter-State Transmission, the revised Indian Electricity Grid Code, Power Market Regulations, Regulation of Power Supply, Regulations on intervening transmission facilities, etc. He introduced various provisions of smart grid in the IEGC. He has a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University and a Diploma in Systems Management from NMIMS, Mumbai, Diploma in Financial Management from IGNOU, New Delhi and also one in Public Speaking from Nazareth Speakers Academy, Mumbai.

  • Dr. Bibek Bandyopadhyaya - Former Director, Solar Energy Centre (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Dr. Bibek Bandyopadhyay is a well recognised expert in the field of Solar Energy. After earning his PhD in solid state physics from Delhi University, he started his work in solar energy in 1980 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. From 1982 onwards, he served at the Department of Science and Technology and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India for more than three decades. As a science administrator, he handled a number of national and international programs related to new and renewable energy in general and solar energy in particular. As one of the senior most Advisers of the Ministry, Dr. Bandyopadhyay was associated in the formulation and implementation of the National Solar Mission- a bold initiative of the Government to promote solar energy as a part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change. He was also involved in promoting hydrogen and fuel cells as an emerging technology in the country. In addition to his role as a Senior Adviser at MNRE, Dr Bandyopadhyay served as the Director of Solar Energy Centre, an institute of the Ministry, from 2005 till his superannuation in August 2013. Dr. Bandyopadhyay contributed immensely towards develop-ing the Centre as a vibrant organisation of international repute. The Centre has since been converted as the National institute of Solar Energy (NISE). Dr. Bandyopadhyay has authored a few books and a number of research papers. He has lectured extensively as a guest faculty in the country and abroad. He served as a Guest Editor for the international journal entitled ‘Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells’ for its PVSEC 18 issue, and also on the editorial board of the ‘Indian Journal of Engineering and Materials Sciences’ during 2010-14. He currently serves as an associate editor of three international journals: ‘Solar Energy’, ‘Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews’ and ‘International Journal of Environment’. After his superannuation from Government of India service, Dr. Bandyopadhyay has been engaged in teaching & research, and also in advisory services in the technical and policy space. In addition, he is asso-ciated with a number of national and international Committees related to emerging energy technologies. He is also in the Board of Directors of West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation Ltd.

  • Reji Kumar Pillai - President, India Smart Grid Forum (Policy Maker) Open or Close

    Reji Pillai is the President of India Smart Grid Forum since its inception in 2011 and is an internationally renowned expert with over three decades of experience in the electricity sector in diverse functions covering the entire value chain and across continents. He is spearheading a mission to leverage technology to transform the electric grid in India and light every home at affordable cost through sustainable developmental models. Reji played the pivotal role in formulation of the Smart Grid Vision & Roadmap for India (August 2013) and the launch of a National Smart Grid Mission (March 2015) by Government of India, issue of Model Smart Grid Regulations (June 2015) by Forum of Regulators; and issue of Standards for Smart Meters (IS 16444 -2015 and IS 15959 Part 2) by Bureau of Indian Standards. He is presently advocating for a “Right to Electricity Act” that will ensure lifeline supply of electricity to all citizens in the country. In November 2016 Reji was unanimously elected as Chairman of Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF), a global umbrella organization of smart grid associations from 16 countries and the European Union. As an entrepreneur, Reji has built successful enterprises in India and overseas and exited them. Reji has studied Engineering, Finance, Management and Law; worked with NTPC and IBM and has been senior consultant with ADB, World Bank and USAID. A recognized thought leader in smart grid technologies and concepts of smart cities, Reji is a popular key-note speaker at international symposiums and conferences on smart grids and smart cities. He has also contributed to several articles and books; and write a fortnightly column “Smartening India” on Infracircle (Infracircle.in), an online publication of News Corp.

  • Dr. Sagar Mitra - Associate Professor, IIT Bombay (Researcher) Open or Close

    Prof. Sagar Mitra, currently is an associate professor in Energy Science and Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. Dr Mitra hasreceived his Ph.D degree in Solid State Electrochemistry from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2004.After completing his PhD, he has joined Prof. J.M. Tarascon's lab for two years as postdoctoral researcher (2004 to 2006). Later, he has joined in electronic industry, Replisaurus Technologies, Stockholm, Sweden as Principal Electrochemist (2006 to 2009). At Replisaurus Technologies, he has received prestigious Swedish award as "Expert in Electrochemistry for Electronic industry" in 2006. He is currently leading the battery research team in National Centre for Solar Photovoltaic Research and Education (funded by ministry of new and renewable energy, govt. of India) at IIT Bombay and his current research mainly focused on advanced materials and technology development for different energy storage applications, particularly in lithium-ion batteries and sodium ion batteries.

  • Dr. Dipak Sen Chaudhuri - Executive VP and Chief – R&D, Industrial Exide Industries Ltd. (Researcher) Open or Close

    Dr. Dipak Sen Chaudhuri has been associated with the storage battery industry for past 35 years and has served India’s largest battery company, Exide Industries Limited, in different capacities over the years, though mostly in the R&D efforts of the company. Whilst most of his career he has primarily working on the lead acid chemistry, off late he is also spear-heading the company’s interests in other chemistries, lithium-ion, for example. Over the years he has been associated with a number of major international names in storage battery industry – the Chloride group, UK, Hitachi, Japan and East Penn Manufacturing of the US. Till very recently he had been serving as the Chief-R&D, Industrial Division of Exide and has now taken up the responsibility of being Advisor, Technology & Innovation for the whole company. Dr. Sen Chaudhuri is a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

  • Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee - Professor, CUNY Energy Institute, City College of New York (Researcher) Open or Close

    Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee is a CUNY distinguished professor of chemical engineering and director of the CUNY Energy Institute, whose headquarters is at The City College of New York. The author of more than 190 articles, book chapters and refereed conference proceedings and the holder of four patents, until March 2008 Banerjee was professor abovescale in the chemical engineering department, with joint appointments in the mechanical engineering department and the Bren School of Environmental Science, at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Banerjee was vice chair of chemical engineering from 1982-84, chair from 1984-90 and is largely responsible for bringing the UCSB chemical engineering department into the top 10 in the country. Previously, he held appointments at the University of California, Berkeley, McMaster University in Canada and Atomic Energy of Canada, ultimately serving as its acting director of applied science. He is a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, which is congressionally mandated to maintain oversight over nuclear power. He also is on the Reference Board of the Norwegian Govt.-Oil Industry Consortium for Oil-Gas Flow Assurance Project. Banerjee also helped to establish several companies based on research collaborations, including Metaheuristics LLC, Mindflash Technologies and Gas Reaction Technologies Inc. Banerjee also has served or serves as a consultant to several oil companies, including ExxonMobile (Houston), Shell (Amsterdam), Statoil (Stavanger), Det Norske Veritas (Oslo), Reliance (Mumbai) and ENI (Milano), as well as many chemical/pharma companies, including Hoffmann LaRoche, Novartis and Novo Nordisk (Denmark). He holds a BS in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and a PhD from the University of Waterloo in Canada.

  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Shukla - Indian Institute of Science (Researcher) Open or Close

    Ashok Kumar Shukla did his MSc (1968) from Kanpur University and PhD (1974) from IIT Kanpur. Subsequently, he worked as a Research Associate, IIT, Kanpur (1974-76). He was an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow at the Technical University, Hannover, (1976-78); INSA-Royal Society Visiting Fellow, and EEC Senior Visiting Scientist, University of Oxford; RA Welch Foundation Visiting Fellow, University of Texas; Royal Society Visiting Fellow, University of Newcastle; Guest Researcher, ONRI, Japan, and Visiting Professor, University of Turku and Helsinki, CNR/TAE, Messina and Monash University, Melbourne. After his return from Germany, he worked at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore (1978-2003). During 2003-08, he was Director at Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. He is presently a Professor at Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, IISc, Bangalore. Shukla's researches relate to materials electrochemistry with emphasis on batteries, fuel cells, electrochemicals supercapacitors and solid ionics. He has published over 250 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and also has 14 patents to his credit. Professor Shukla is Associate Editor of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, Bulletin of Materials Science and Electrochimica Acta. Shukla won the MRSI-Medal (1993) and MRSI-ICSC Superconductivity and Materials Science Annual Prize (2006). He was also conferred the Vigyan Ratna Award by Council of Science and Technology, Government of Uttar Pradesh (2005-06). He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (2005).

  • Tejas Kshatriya - Associate VP – Hybrid Electric Technology, KPIT (Researcher) Open or Close

    When the idea of Revolo first occurred to young KPIT Cummins engineer Tejas Kshatriya, he was actually stuck in Mumbai traffic en route to Pune, where the firm is based. What started as a thought back in 2008 evolved through trial and error into a system that can be retrofitted to any vehicle at an average cost of Rs. 1 lakh. The company has so far filed for 11 patents, a majority of the applications authored by Kshatriya.

  • Nidhi Agrawal - Team Lead R&D, Pluss (Researcher) Open or Close

    Nidhi Agrawal’s first job was at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi, on chemical synthesis of UV active compounds for DNA labeling. With an eagerness to see her work converted into products, she moved from a pure research environment to an industrial environment where she developed methods for characterization of newly designed chemical compounds. However, in her quest for innovation, she connected with PLUSS. With a belief that energy will be the key to the future, the idea of working on PCMs to store energy appealed to her. What followed was a steep learning curve and over a span of 5 years she built a team and has created several PCMs. Form stable PCM is one of the products which brought a significant change in the pattern of products developed at PLUSS. Nidhi graduated in Chemical Sciences and did her post-graduation in Organic Chemistry from St. Stephens College, Delhi University (2005) where she was awarded the best student of the year. In 2007, she submitted her thesis for M.Phil. which focused on ‘enzymatic studies of nucleosides’ and received the prestigious ‘Science Meritorious’ award.

  • Dr. Satyajit Phadke - Senior Consultant, Customized Energy Solutions (Emerging Researcher) Open or Close

    Dr. Satyajit Phadke joined CES in January 2015. His focus is on consulting services in the area of energy storage and conversion technologies for various applications such as automotive, stationary power, portable power and grid scale storage.     Venkat Srinivasan, JCESR Deputy Director, Research and Development, facilitates and integrates the center’s many research activities across the entire program and delivers the programs’ progress to the Executive Committee. Srinivasan is also director of the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science (ACCESS). ACCESS provides the vision and coordinates the energy storage programs at Argonne and serves as a point of entry for industry to take advantage of the unique capabilities and facilities at Argonne to solve their problems in energy storage. Before joining Argonne, Srinivasan was a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2003. At Berkeley Lab, Srinivasan conceived the idea of CalCharge, a public-private partnership in California working to accelerate the development, commercialization, and adoption of new energy storage technologies for the consumer, transportation, and grid markets. While at Berkeley Lab, Srinivasan also served as the technical manager of the Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies (BATT) Program, as the acting director of the BATT program, as department head of the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources (ESDR) Department, and the interim director of the ESDR Division. Srinivasan carried out his postdoctoral work on iron phosphate-based lithium-ion cells at Berkeley Lab and the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina.

    Sunita Satyapal is the Director of the Fuel Cell Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the Department of Energy (DOE). In this capacity, she is responsible for the office's overall strategy and execution, including oversight and coordination of approximately $100 million in research, development, demonstration, and deployment activities related to hydrogen and fuel cells. After joining DOE in 2003, she served primarily as the Hydrogen Storage Team Lead until 2008. She then served as the Hydrogen Office's Chief Engineer and Deputy Director. For several years she has coordinated hydrogen and fuel cell activities across DOE, with other agencies, and with international stakeholders, including with seventeen countries and the European Commission, through the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy. In addition to her time at DOE, she has more than 20 years of experience in academia, industry, and government, including at United Technologies Research Center and at UTC Fuel Cells in Connecticut. While in industry, she was responsible for managing research groups ranging from 15 to 50 scientists, engineers, and technicians covering a broad range of chemistry and energy technologies, including hydrogen and fuel cell research and development (R&D). She also served as business development manager to develop strategic R&D collaborations, both for government programs and international markets. Earlier in her career, she was a visiting assistant professor at Vassar College, and a visiting scientist at Columbia University and at Hokkaido University in Japan. She has also worked in the area of laser diagnostics in photodissociation and in the combustion of chemical warfare agents.     Shobit Omar is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Materials Science & Engineering Department at IIT Kanpur. He has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø-DTU in Denmark. During this period, he was involved in the rational designing and advanced electrochemical characterizations of novel ceramic fuel cell materials, performing long-term ageing study, and electron microscopy characterization of aged ceramic materials. Shobit Omar’s main research interest involves solid-state ionic materials with the main focus on the development of solid oxide fuel cells.     Dr. Judy Jeevarajan works at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., as a Research Director for Electrochemical Safety with battery safety as her area of specialization. She has worked in the area of batteries for more than 19 years with a primary focus on the lithium-ion chemistry. She had worked on-site at NASA-Johnson Space Center in Houston since 1998. At NASA, she was the Group Lead for Battery Safety and Advanced Technology at NASA-JSC. Before becoming a civil servant at NASA in 2003, she worked for Lockheed Martin Space Operations. She has a M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame (’91) and she graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Electrochemistry) from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1995. Dr. Jeevarajan worked for a small business company in College Station, TX for a year immediately after completion of graduate work. Following this, she worked for a year as a post-doctoral fellow at Texas A&M University on NASA projects. At NASA, Dr. Jeevarajan not only represented the battery group at all the NASA safety panels but also led the advanced battery technology work with a special focus on the safety improvements. At Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Dr. Jeevarajan continues to work on battery safety research and her recent work includes safety trends in aged li-ion cells and modules, fire suppressants for li-ion battery fires, consumer battery safety, etc. Dr. Jeevarajan serves in the Technical Working Group for standards organizations such as Underwriter’s Laboratories, SAE, ICAO/SAE, RTCA and IEC/ANSI and is currently leading an effort under AIAA to write a space safety standard for battery systems. She has written two book chapters, one on battery safety that was published in 2009 and a second one on commercial li-ion cell safety, published in January 2014. Dr. Jeevarajan supported the Boeing 787 Investigation as a member of a Non-Advocate Review panel as well as an advisory member to the FAA and also supported an NTSB informational forum on li-ion batteries. Dr. Jeevarajan is also Co-Chairing a Battery Safety Council with the NTSB that meets twice a year on an invitation-only basis and brings together several sectors that includes battery experts and users to understand the safety issues facing the battery industry.   • Haresh Kamath - Program Manager, Energy Storage Electric Power Research Institute(EPRI) (Researcher) Open or Close

    Haresh Kamath is Program Manager for Energy Storage at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), managing the Institute’s research into the development, assessment, and application of energy storage technologies for grid storage applications. He is also a Technology Scout for EPRI’s Technology Innovation Program, where he investigates advanced materials technologies for power delivery applications, and advanced energy storage technologies. Kamath joined EPRI PEAC in 2002 as a project engineer in energy storage and distributed generation.     Dr. Jhunjhunwala is considered the pioneer in nurturing Industry -Academia interaction in India towards R&D, Innovation and Product Development.     Sachindra Prosad Saha will be remembered among Indias industrialists not only for his pioneering enterprise, but also for his simplicity and philanthropy. The qualities were his own. Yet they were also part of Indian tradition that was forged in the crucible of the struggle for independence, of which the National Council of Education at Jadavpur, with which Mr. Saha was closely involved all his life, was both a symbol and a product. Though he spent his entire adult life in Calcutta, and traveled the world over many times, Mr. Saha never forgot his roots in Sailakupa village in Jessore district (now in Bangladesh) where he was born. People from his village, especially those less fortunate than him, were always assured of a helping hand. That, too was a feature of the tradition he epitomised. So were his philanthropic undertakings, Mr. Saha was a benefactor to a number of charities, and connected with the Ramakrishna Mission, The Bharat Sevashram Sangha, the Rotary Club of Calcutta, and many other social welfare organisations. He set up the Santi Prosad Saha Memorial Charitable Trust in honour of a son who died tragically early, to help people through other organisations, including the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore. Mr. S. P. Saha was a founder-Director of Sen-Raleigh Ltd., a former Director of Bengal Lamps Ltd., the West Bengal Small Industries Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Musical Products Ltd. and many other companies. He was President of the West Bengal unit of The All-India Manufacturers Organisation, and of the All-India Battery Manufacturers Association, a member of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Amidst all these activities, and the numerous conferences and seminars on lead acid storage battery and the lead industry in Europe and the United States to which he was invited, Mr Saha retained his early allegiance to Jadavpur. He set up the Bharat Battery Research Centre and established the H.L. Roy memorial chair, both in the Universitys Chemical Engineering Department. At the time of his death, Mr. Saha was President of the Alumni Association of Jadavpur University and the NCE. He was also a member of the latters Executive Committee. He had been a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers(India) since 1972, and was a founder-member and honorary Fellow of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers.

    Harish Hande is an Indian social entrepreneur, who co-founded SELCO India in 1995. Today, Harish serves as the Chairman of the Board at SELCO. He is now focusing on supporting the SELCO foundation which operates rural labs across India, a first step towards fostering an ecosystem where technology, finance, entrepreneurship and policy intersect. Harish envisages these labs transforming the problem-solving capacity of communities to address the unique local needs within their ecosystem.     Dr. Sharan during the period 1974-1979 became Director Engineering of BHEL that Dr. Sharan’s commitment to renewable energy for rural development began. 17 years were spent by him with Sulzer Brothers, Switzerland. As manager R&D, he managed technology transfer and co-operation with the licensees, had a large number of patents to his credit and published a large number of technical papers in international journals. He was invited by the Government of India to come back and participate in the restructuring of BHEL. He was a member on several national level policy making bodies and committees of Government of India and co-ordinated international energy cooperation programs with Germany, USA and USSR. He was one of the founder directors of NTPC and was on the board of several other technology organisations. Dr. Sharan, jointly with Dr. Jhirad of Rockefeller Foundation, conceptualised the SPEED program which is helping to integrate telecom towers as an anchor load in villages and can accelerate the process of large scale replication of the integrated model. Dr. Sharan is now working to make the case for the creation of a Decentralsied Energy Sector which, working in parallel with the Centralised Sector, should take the responsibility for integrated energy supplies and services in villages. He graduated in 1953 and went to Manchester University where he completed his Ph.D. in 1957.

  • (Late) Sachindra Prosad Saha - Founder, Bharat Battery Manufacturing Co. (Business Leader) Open or Close

    Sachindra Prosad Saha will be remembered among Indias industrialists not only for his pioneering enterprise, but also for his simplicity and philanthropy. The qualities were his own. Yet they were also part of Indian tradition that was forged in the crucible of the struggle for independence, of which the National Council of Education at Jadavpur, with which Mr. Saha was closely involved all his life, was both a symbol and a product. Though he spent his entire adult life in Calcutta, and traveled the world over many times, Mr. Saha never forgot his roots in Sailakupa village in Jessore district (now in Bangladesh) where he was born. People from his village, especially those less fortunate than him, were always assured of a helping hand. That, too was a feature of the tradition he epitomised. So were his philanthropic undertakings, Mr. Saha was a benefactor to a number of charities, and connected with the Ramakrishna Mission, The Bharat Sevashram Sangha, the Rotary Club of Calcutta, and many other social welfare organisations. He set up the Santi Prosad Saha Memorial Charitable Trust in honour of a son who died tragically early, to help people through other organisations, including the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore. Mr. S. P. Saha was a founder-Director of Sen-Raleigh Ltd., a former Director of Bengal Lamps Ltd., the West Bengal Small Industries Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Musical Products Ltd. and many other companies. He was President of the West Bengal unit of The All-India Manufacturers Organisation, and of the All-India Battery Manufacturers Association, a member of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Amidst all these activities, and the numerous conferences and seminars on lead acid storage battery and the lead industry in Europe and the United States to which he was invited, Mr Saha retained his early allegiance to Jadavpur. He set up the Bharat Battery Research Centre and established the H.L. Roy memorial chair, both in the Universitys Chemical Engineering Department. At the time of his death, Mr. Saha was President of the Alumni Association of Jadavpur University and the NCE. He was also a member of the latters Executive Committee. He had been a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers(India) since 1972, and was a founder-member and honorary Fellow of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers.
