Indian energy storage sector is becoming promising with over 46 MW large scale projects announced in 2016 and 56 MWh of projects announced this year till date. There are 19 applications for energy storage in Indian market, which creates more than 200 MWh of opportunities for the next five years.

India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) predicts that the renewable integration, grid applications, electric vehicle & charging infrastructure and commercial and industrial applications will act as the major catalyst for energy storage adaptations in India. Energy storage plays an important role into Renewable Integration, Micro-grids, Electric Mobility, Smart Grid and Smart Cities initiatives by the Government of India.

IESA organised India Energy Storage Policy Forum recently in Delhi with an objective to have a dialogue between thought leaders from industry and the policy makers to identify policy priorities that can help drive adoption of energy storage in India and make India a global hub for manufacturing of advanced energy storage technologies by 2020.

The Forum focused on policy discussion on electric vehicles, manufacturing and innovation besides Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for renewable energy (RE) integration.

Top level officials from government bodies who are working on regulations that affect energy storage, micro-grids and electric vehicles were part of the forum. The government organisations represented included NITI Aayog, Invest India, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority, Department of Science & Technology, Indian Railways, Power Grid Corporation of India, National Thermal Power Corporation, Solar Energy Corporation of India among others.

With Energy Storage rising to the forefront across US, Europe, China, Asia and Australia, the Global Energy Storage Alliance (GESA) has announced September 22 as the World Energy Storage Day to acknowledge its importance. The goal of GESA is to advance education, collaboration, knowledge and proven frameworks about the benefits of energy storage and how it can be used to achieve a more efficient, cleaner, reliable, affordable and secure electric power system globally.
